US Supermarket Giant Pricemart Enters Xinjiang

Pricemart, the third largest supermarket chain in the United States, has expanded its business into the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China.

Pricemart, the third largest supermarket chain in the United States, has expanded its business into the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, northwest China.

Construction has begun on a Pricemart outlet in the Shihezi Economic and Technological Development Zone, making it the company's 31st store in China.

Costing 70 million yuan (8.43 million US dollars), the first phase of the Shihezi Pricemart supermarket, with a floor area of 24,000 square meters, is expected to go into operation early next year. A Pricemart manager said they will invest another 50 million Yuan (6.02 million US dollars) in constructing the second phase ata later date.

So far this year, Pricemart's 30 supermarkets in China have generated six billion yuan (720 million US dollars) in sales, compared with four billion yuan (480 million US dollars) for the whole of last year.
