Israeli Army Enters Gaza City

Israeli army supported by tanks, Apache helicopters and armored vehicles made an overnight incursion into Gaza City, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said.

Israeli army supported by tanks, Apache helicopters and armored vehicles made an overnight incursion into Gaza City, Palestinian security sources and eyewitnesses said.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the tanks and the armored vehicles leaving from the the Jewish settlement of Nitzarim in the southern Gaza Strip and rolling deep into the neighborhood of Sheikh Ajlien in Gaza City that is under the Palestinian control.

About four tanks and four armored vehicles entered the beachsidearea, and stationed on a crossroad that leads to the new part of the city, the sources said.

The tanks stood about one km from the headquarters of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat on the beachside of Gaza city.

Palestinian security sources said it is the first time that a number of Israeli tanks entered the neighborhood since Israel pulled out of the city after signing the Oslo agreement in 1993.

Palestinian militants fired an anti-tank missile that targeted aPalestinian house occupied by Israeli soldiers who are observing southern Gaza City's beachside.

A public security statement said Israeli naval gunship fired heavy gunshots at the Gaza beachside, causing horror among the residents who fled their homes.

Meanwhile, the statement said several tanks had also entered thenorthern Gaza Strip and fired heavy gunshots. No injuries were reported.

In both towns of Rafah and Khan Younis of the Gaza Strip, Israeli tanks fired heavy gunshots at the Palestinian residential areas during armed confrontations between Israeli troops and Palestinian militants.
