The Chinese Ministry of Agriculture has approved imports of colicure bacterin from the United States to lower the level of antibiotics residue in milk.

The bacterin is effective in preventing mastitis in cattle, thus helping decrease the use of antibiotics, said an official from the Shanghai Tongren Pharmacies Company, the sole seller of the bacterin in China.

Antibiotics residue has become a sensitive issue in China's milk market. Nearly 30 percent of cows suffer from mastitis, a major cause of the antibiotics residue. Long-term consumption of their milk may cause resistance to antibiotics, according to experts.

Colicure has been used in the US for 20 years and proved to be safe, said the official, adding that the manufacturer of the bacterin is considering building a production base in China.

The cost of the bacterin is about 120 yuan per cow, while the gains from using less antibiotics and lowering death tolls of cattle is expected to reach 300 yuan, according to experts.
