Construction of a new thermal power plant with huge single-generator capacity began Wednesday in the city of Hancheng in northwest China's Shaanxi province.

One of the major power projects, the Hancheng No.2 Power Plant has drawn 5.2 billion yuan (about 626.5 million US dollars) in investments which includes a loan of 32.826 billion yen (about 550million US dollars) from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC).

The project is designed to have a generating capacity of 2.4 million kilowatts when two phases of its construction are completed, sources noted.

The two 600,000-kilowatt generating units are planned to be installed in the first-phase project, and the first generating unit will become operational by 2005.

The sulfur and dust contents in the waste gas are expected to be filtered, which will greatly reduce the pollution to the environment, experts said.
