Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has postponed his trip to the United States set for next month, a senior Israeli official said today.

Sharon was to visit Florida on Sept. 9, one day before a primary election for the Democratic candidate for governor. Some Democrats said Sharon's presence could boost incumbent Republican Gov. Jeb Bush, the president's brother.

The Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Florida politics had nothing to do with the decision to delay the trip. He said domestic issues arose that required Sharon's presence in Israel, mentioning security and the state budget as examples.

David Douek, a spokesman for the Israeli consulate in Los Angeles, confirmed that Sharon had postponed his trip. Sharon also was scheduled to visit California.

The Bush administration has been exceptionally friendly to Sharon's government during fighting with the Palestinians, and some Israelis active in U.S. political parties assumed that Sharon's visit would help Gov. Bush in his reelection bid.

Sharon cut short two previous trips to the United States after Palestinians carried out suicide bomb attacks. On both occasions, visits to Florida were canceled.
