Chinese President Jiang Zemin and Premier Zhu Rongji on Friday sent congratulatory messages to the Malaysian government on the 45th anniversary of the independence of Malaysia, which falls on Saturday.

Thanks to the united efforts of its industrious and intelligent people, Jiang said in his message, Malaysia has in the past 45 years witnessed remarkable achievements in its economic advancement and social development. "I am sincerely heartened by the economic prosperity, social stability and people's well-being in Malaysia."

The traditional friendship between the Chinese and Malaysian peoples is traced back to the ancient times, Jiang noted, adding that since the two countries established diplomatic ties, their relations of good neighborliness and friendly cooperation have achieved solid development. "I believe that, through the joint efforts of both sides, the existing friendly relations between our two countries will be continuously strengthened and deepened."

Premier Zhu said in his message that through admirable self-reliance, the Malaysian government and people have successfully withstood the impact of the Asian financial crisis, overcome the influence of global economic slowdown and achieved steady economic growth.

"In recent years, the friendly cooperation in various fields between China and Malaysia, through the joint efforts of both sides, has been very fruitful," Zhu said, noting that the first half of 2002, in particular, saw a remarkable growth in bilateral trade, making Malaysia China's largest trading partner in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. "This fully demonstrates the tremendous potential and bright prospect of Sino-Malaysian cooperation," he said, adding that the Chinese government will work together with the Malaysian government to "continue to advance the smooth development of our bilateral relations of good neighborliness and mutual trust for the benefits of our two peoples."

Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan also sent a congratulatory message on the occasion.
