China to Invest More into Key Research Projects

China will invest a total of 20 billion yuan (about 2.4 billion US dollars) in a series of key scientific research projects over the next five years, the English language newspaper China Daily reported Saturday.

China will invest a total of 20 billion yuan (about 2.4 billion US dollars) in a series of key scientific research projects over the next five years, the English language newspaper China Daily reported Saturday.

Xu Guanhua, Minister of Science and Technology, was speaking atthe three-day First China Scientists Conference, which opened Friday in Beijing and attracted more than 700 participants from the science circle in China.

The projects will involve research in fields such as integratedcircuity, electrically powered automobiles, new medical and biological techniques, Xu said.

The scientists attending the conference will discuss issues ranging from engineering techniques and modernization to life science and biological techniques, the paper said.

Xu said China will try to develop a group of sound intermediaryinstitutions so that more scientific and technical achievements can be industrialized.
