China Beats Algeria 96-82 at Basketball Worlds

With 38 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks, Chinese giant Yao Ming led China to a 96-82 victory over Algeria here at the World Basketball Championships Friday night.

With 38 points, 13 rebounds and 8 blocks, Chinese giant Yao Ming led China to a 96-82 victory over Algeria here at the World Basketball Championships Friday night.

China tried to give more chances to those young players, sending the young-studded squads after they led 28-10 in the firstquarter, which handed the rival a golden opportunity to fight back.

Algeria trailed 69-63 with five minutes left in the third quarter and erased China's lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

At that time, NBA number one draft pick Yao Ming took over. The2.26-meter-tall center scored 10 of his 38 points and three of hiseight blocks in a seven-minute period to spur the Chinese team straight to the final triumph.

"Our team had a nice open both in attacking and defending. But the problem came out when the team met difficulties," said Wang Fei, head coach of the Chinese national team.

"Those young players were not able to control the rhythm of thegame, especially when they met rival's turnabout. It's too slowlyfor them to go back for defending, which handed rivals lots of easy points" added Wang,

"Another big problem is passing, too many tourovers in passing."

There were altogether 19 turnovers for China in the Friday's game, which offered the Algerians 16 points as gift.

Bateer, Hu Weidong and Liu Wei contributed night points apiece.Li Nan added 14 points and four assists, Gong Xiaobin had six points, six rebounds and four assists.

The shotting guard Doubal scored 24 to lead Algeria. Boughedir contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists and Boulayaadded 19 points.

China (1-1) advances into the next round after beating Algeria (0-2), while Algeria faces the early elimination unless they couldmake a surprising over-15 points triumph over Germany (1-1) at Saturday's match.

"We expect our young players would gain more experience at tomorrow's game against the United States" said Wang.
