Pre-tournament favorites China won their second victory in the first round competition as they beat top South American team Brazil three sets to one at the women's volleyball world championships Saturday in Leipzig.

The set scores were 25-23, 23-25, 25-17 and 25-23 against the four-time World Grand Prix winners Brazil who won Group D opener here on Friday, beating Poland 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.

With two titles of world championships and as many World Cup tournaments, the Chinese took the Olympic gold medal in the 1984 Games. Having failed to win any of the eight World Grand Prix tournaments so far held, they came out winners at this year's Grand Champions Cup meet in Japan.

Tipped as one of the hot title-contenders, China beat outsiders Australia 25-12, 25-18, 25-16 here on Friday.

The first set saw the scores tied for seven times in the early stage. China led by one point at 8-7 at the first technical time-out. From then on, the Chinese managed to widen the gap, by steadily collecting points and leading 16-12 at the second technical time-out. They never gave any chance to the South Americans and won the set 25-23.

The Brazilians came back strong in the second set and, with improved attacks, they led 8-4 at the first technical time-out and10-8 at the second. Chinese managed to turn the tide to level the score for the first time at 22-22, which, unfortunately, was proved short-lived as the Brazilians added more points to seal the set and level the sets.

The Chinese pulled away from a 4-4 tie in the third set and led8-6 at the first technical time-out and 12-8 when the Brazilian coach Marco Aurelio Motta called for their first time-out of the set. They won the set 25-17.

With efficient blocking, the South Americans overcame fierce Chinese attacks to level the scores eight times up to the middle stage of the fourth set.

China led 16-14 at the second technical time-out and 22-18 when Motta called for the second time-out. With swift attacks and helped by Chinese errors, Brazil managed to level the score at 22-22 and 23-23. But a determined Chinese squad took two consecutive points to seal the set and the match in their favor.
