An Indonesian official, Milton Kansil, and a US consultant, Vincent A. Lacelly, signed an agreement on Saturday for the construction of a dockyard for warships in Bitung, North Sumawesi province.

According to the national news agency Antara here, the project is estimated to cost some 3 trillion rupiah (about 333 million US dollars) and could become operational in 2005. The signing ceremony was witnessed by US Naval Attache in Indonesia Rick Marthines.

The project consultant Vincet A Marthines said Bitung had been chosen for the project because it is strategically located while its geography is suitable for docking of ships.

He said the US administration as well as the Congress has given their approval to the project. Originally, the facility would be built in Guam but it was eventually decided to do it in Bitung, he explained.

Initially, the work to build the facility was to have started in 1992 but due to obstacles following the closure of a US base in the Philippines, it was delayed.

Marthines said the US had for the past 10 years been looking for a suitable place to build the docking facility.

He also revealed the facility would become a repair center for US, European, Japanese, Australian and Indonesian warships as well as commercial ships.
