Zhang Yining Wins Women's Table Tennis World Cup

Second-ranked Zhang Yining swept a pair of fellow Chinese to take the women's table tennis World Cup title in Singapore on Sunday for the second year in a row.

Second-ranked Zhang Yining swept a pair of fellow Chinese to take the women's table tennis World Cup title in Singapore on Sunday for the second year in a row.

In the semifinal, Zhang scored an easy victory over Lin Ling of Hong Kong, China, 11-5, 11-7, 11-4, 11-3, and defeated compatriot Li Nan, a late replacement for top-ranked Wang Nan of China, 11-9,11-8, 11-3, 11-9.

Coach Li Xiaodong said that he was pleased with Zhang's performance as she has suffered an injury to her right thign.

In other actions, Tie Yana of Hong Kong, China, another late substitute for injured African champion Oshonaike Funke of Nigeria, defeated fellow Hong Kong player Lin Ling for the third place, 11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 2-11 and 11-9

Tie, who ranked 23th, said she never expected to even make it to the semifinals as she only received a last-minute call to the invitational tournament.

Tie was defeated in her semifinal match against Li Nan of China10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 11-2, 12-10.

The sixth annual tournament featured seven of the world's top 10 women competing for 85,000 US dollars in prize money.
