Iraqi National Assembly Speaker Saadoun Hamadi on Sunday discussed with visiting Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) Secretary-General Noureddine Bouchekoudj the preparations for an extraordinary AIPU meeting on US war threats against Iraq.

Hamadi said the two sides intend to cooperate in holding a successful meeting of the Arab parliaments, which is scheduled to take place on Sept. 3 in Baghdad, the official Iraqi News Agency (INA) reported.

For his part, Bouchekoudj praised Iraq's efforts to facilitate the upcoming meeting and reiterated AIPU member states' solidarity with Iraq "to confront the American conspiracies and its ally Israel against the Arab nation," INA said.

The Iraqi parliament in July sent letters to its Arab counterparts, calling for an extraordinary AIPU session to discuss the US threats against Iraq as soon as possible either in Baghdad or in AIPU-based Damascus, Syria.

US President George W. Bush has branded Iraq as part of an "axis of evil," along with Iran and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and accused them of pursuing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism.

Bush has repeatedly vowed to achieve a "regime change" in Iraq with all the tools at his disposal, including military actions.

Iraq has remained adamant in the face of the US threats.
