S. African President to Open High-level Summit Segment Monday

South African President Thabo Mbeki will make an opening address first in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to be held Monday at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg.

South African President Thabo Mbeki will make an opening address first in the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to be held Monday at the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg.

"The plenary meeting will be opened at 9 a.m. (0700 GMT) by the president of the summit and President Thabo Mbeki of South Africa,then followed by United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan," Spokeswoman Susan Markham said at the press briefing here Sunday.

At the opening of the summit on Monday, five children will give speeches, representing the future generation, including Tiyiselani Manganyi, who is believed to be the youngest delegate of the summit, Susan said.

"Following the opening part of the summit tomorrow, the heads of government and state will speak according to the order listed in the journal," she added.

She said that the first full round table discussion between the heads of state and government, UN agencies and other organizationsand representatives of the major groups will be held at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) Monday.

The spokeswoman said that Annan, who arrived here earlier Sunday, would address the Business Day organized by Business Action for Sustainable Development at the Hilton Hotel of Sandton Monday afternoon.

As of Sunday, over 20,000 accreditation passes had been issued,including about 9,000 for delegations, more than 7,700 for major groups and over 3,700 for the media.

She also said more progress has been made on the issues such ashealth, water and biodiversity, but some thorny issues remained unsolved such as financing and trade.

The Earth Summit, billed as the largest UN gathering in early 21st century, is expected to work out an implementation resolutionfor sustainable development worldwide before it concludes on Wednesday.
