A Relatively Strong Quake Jolts Western Iran

A relatively strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, shook Iran's western city of Razan in Hamedan Province early Monday.

A relatively strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.1 degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, shook Iran's western city of Razan in Hamedan Province early Monday.

The Geophysics Institute of Tehran University said the quake occurred at 04:30 local time (2400 GMT), the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

Half an hour later, a minor quake, with a magnitude of at least two degrees on the open-ended Richter scale, jolted the nearby cityof Hamedan at 05:00 local time (0030 GMT).

No report has been received so far on possible casualties or damage inflicted by the quakes.

Iran sits on some of the world's seismic fault lines and is often shaken by earthquakes of various intensities.

On June 22, a quake measuring 6.3 on the open-ended Richter scale hit the northwestern and western provinces of Qazvin, Hamedanand Zanjan.

At least 305 people were killed in the quake and about 25,000 people displaced.
