Uganda's Lord Resistance Army (LRA) rebels have killed six army officers including two majors and seriously injured three others in an ambush in the northern district of Pader, reported the New Vision newspaper Tuesday.

The two majors are major Moses Agetta, 85th battalion commander of the newly established 5th division, and major Steve Bwambale, 5th division intelligence officer. They were killed on Sunday evening when they were traveling with their escorts to attend a top army meeting in Kitgum town.

Ugandan army spokesman Shaban Bantariza said the majors were shot and killed at 6 p.m. (1500 GMT) when they slowed down on seeing men in military uniform on the road whom they thought were government soldiers.

"The death of these officers in an ambush is a clear testimony that the so-called ceasefire declared by LRA is fake. Between us and the rebels, it is war. But that should not stop the holy men in the north from pursuing the peace line," Bantariza said.

The 5th division with 10,000 soldiers was established recently and deployed in northern Uganda to fight against the LRA rebels.

Meanwhile, the government army has warned the population in the northern Gulu district not to attend rallies by LRA rebels after 23 people were abducted on Saturday while attending such a rally.

"The LRA lured the people to the rally and crushed their bicycles, smashing them against the ground, hitting them with gun butts," army 4th division spokesman Paddy Ankunda said.

LRA rebels, based in southern Sudan, have abducted some 14,000 children and displaced hundreds of thousands of people in northern Uganda in the last 16 years.
