Israel's Population Hits Record 6.592 Million by 2001

Israel's population hit a record 6.592 million at the end of 2001, with Jews accounting for 77.2 percent, the Ha'aretz Daily's website reported on Tuesday.

Israel's population hit a record 6.592 million at the end of 2001, with Jews accounting for 77.2 percent, the Ha'aretz Daily's website reported on Tuesday.

In 2001, the total population grew by 2.1 percent, or some 133,000 people, on a yearly basis, the Central Bureau of Statistics was quoted as saying.

At the end of last year, 15.4 percent of the country's citizens were Muslim, 2.1 percent were Christian and 1.6 percent were Druze.

And some 3.5 percent of the country's citizens were defined as having no religion.

Israel took in 43,600 immigrants in 2001, the lowest number since 1990, and a drop of 28 percent compared with the 2000 figure,said the report.
