Russia Reaffirms Support for Peaceful Solution to Iraqi Issue

Visiting Russian Mideast envoy Andrei Vdovin on Tuesday reaffirmed support for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue.

Visiting Russian Mideast envoy Andrei Vdovin on Tuesday reaffirmed support for a peaceful solution to the Iraqi issue.

"Russia opposes the use of force and supports a peaceful solutions on the Iraqi issue," Vdovin told reporters after his meeting with Arab League chief Amr Moussa.

He underlined the importance of seeking a comprehensive solutionbased on the return of UN weapon inspectors and the lifting of sanctions on Iraq.

The Russian envoy arrived here earlier in the day for talks on the volatile Mideast situation and a possible US attack on Iraq.

Vdovin's visit to Egypt came one day after Russia reiterated itsopposition to the US threat to attack Iraq.

"Any military decisions concerning Iraq would not only further complicate an Iraqi settlement, but also undermine the situation inthe Persian Gulf and the Middle East," Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov told reporters after talks with his Iraqi counterpart Naji Sabri on Monday in Moscow.

The United States has accused Iraq of developing weapons of massdestruction and posing a threat to security of its neighboring countries, an allegation denied by Iraq.

Arab countries and some US allies in Europe have warned of severe consequences in the Mideast region and the world at large ifthe United States attacks Iraq.

Vdovin last visited Egypt in late June.
