The New Zealand government has appointed former World Trade Organization Director-General Mike Moore as its special trade envoy.

New Zealand Trade Negotiations Minister Jim Sutton said in a statement Thursday that Moore, a former prime minister, would continue to work in his own personal capacity to promote international trade.

Moore, who has been WTO director-general over the past three years, has offered his services to the government to help promote New Zealand's position on trade as he travelled around the world, Sutton said.

Appointing Moore as a special trade envoy, he added, would givehim the status to speak on behalf of the New Zealand Government.

Moore's work would include giving speeches on New Zealand's trade policy and meeting government and non-government leaders to discuss New Zealand's vision for greater trade liberalization, according to Sutton.
