New Zealand Tops China 94-88 in Basketball Worlds

Phil Jones scored 33 points, made six 3-pointers and rallied New Zealand from a 24-point deficit in a 94-88 win over China in the World Championships.

China's 24-point lead in the first quarter was erased by New Zealand as China lost to the rival 94-88 surprisingly at the end.

Phil Jones scored 33 points, made six 3-pointers and rallied New Zealand from a 24-point deficit to beat China in the key game.

Yao Ming, the NBA's No. 1 draft pick by the Houston Rockets, scored 27 points and did not miss a shot for China. He was 8-for-8 from the field and made all 11 free throws.

New Zealand (3-3) was down by nine points midway through the third quarter when it went on a 17-0 run, capping a comeback that began in the second quarter.

Jones's shot handed New Zealand an 81-80 lead with 5:30 left.

China (1-5) followed with a shot-clock violation on the next possession, and Pero Cameron capitalized with a basket. Cameron had 12 points. Jones then scored off another China turnover to make it 86-81.

A 3-point play by Yao pulled China to 90-88 but that was as close as it would get.

Li Nan scored 33 points and went 8-for-12 from 3-point range. Li made six straight 3-pointers in the first half, helping China to a 24-point lead.

Jones made five 3-pointers in the second quarter and Ed Book hit one right before the buzzer to slice China's lead to nine at the half.

"It's a pity to lose such a game, which should belong to us a one more winning. We did lost many chances when they extended their defending range," said Wang Fei, head coach of the Chinese team."

New Zealand's coach said they adopted right strategy to accumulate strength for the last quarter's counterattack, which help them outplay China 94-88 at the end.
