Visiting Chinese top legislator Li Peng and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra discussed bilateral issues Thursday, vowing to keep the momentum of current frequent high-level contacts between the two nations.

Li noted that leaders of China and Thailand have exchanged visits and kept close contacts during recent years, and established sound working relations and profound personal friendship between leaders.

"Such kind of direct dialogue provided great impetus for stable and continuous development of bilateral ties, and should be maintained as time goes on," he said.

Li, who is on his second visit to the kingdom as the chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC),China's top legislature, said relations between China and Thailand have withstood tests of historical changes in the world, and have already entered a phase of smooth development.

Li and Thaksin agreed that the joint Chinese-Thai plan for co-developing the Mekong River, which links the two countries, will benefit economic development and people in both countries.

"It is very wise for China to choose a political and economic development which fits it best," Thaksin said.

He said Thailand admires China's great achievement in all aspects during recent years, which he believes will be conducive to further developing bilateral ties in an all-around way.

The Thai premier thanked Li for China's support for the Asian Cooperation Dialogue (ACD) mechanism initiated by Thailand, saying China's support will help all Asian nations collectively play a bigger role in the international arena.

Li expressed his appreciation for Thailand's stand of adhering to the one-China policy.

Thaksin said the Thai government will never change its policy on this issue.

The two leaders also exchanged views on a number of international issues and found they shared many common opinions.

They agreed that the world needs peace and development can only be achieved under a peaceful environment.

If any war ever breaks out, civilians will suffer the most and it will make the world's anti-poverty goals more difficult to achieve, said the two leaders.

Flying in here Tuesday, the Chinese top legislator is on his 5-day official goodwill visit to the kingdom. Thailand is the first leg of his four-nation Asia-Pacific tour, which will also carry him to Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia.
