Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met South African business leaders on Friday, saying that China attached great importance to the friendly cooperation with South Africa.

The Chinese government actively promoted the complementary and mutually beneficial exchanges and cooperation with South Africa, said Zhu.

The trade between China and South Africa has seen great increase in the past ten year, with the total volume rising from 14 million US dollars in 1991 to 2.222 billion dollars in 2001, Zhu added.

After the successful visits by the state leaders of the two countries, during which important agreements were signed to guide the bilateral ties, the cooperation in the fields of economy and trade had been further developed, which was characterized with the extension of cooperation fields and expansion of cooperation styles.

Currently, South Africa is China's largest trade partner in Africa, said Zhu.

Zhu went on to say that the economic cooperation between China and South Africa had great potentials, for the economies of two countries have their own advantages.

South Africa has abundant mineral resources and some enterprises own unique technologies in some fields, while the Chinese companies also have their advanced techniques in some fields.

He hoped two countries' business leaders would strengthen exchanges, broaden ways for further cooperation and solve the arisen problems through friendly coordination.

Zhu was confident that with the concerted efforts of the two sides, the bilateral economic cooperation would be improved to a new stage.

While briefing the South African business leaders the economic development of China, the Chinese premier expressed his appreciation to the South African companies, which played an active role in developing friendship between two countries and promoting the mutually beneficial cooperation.

Zhu also said that the Chinese government encouraged and supported the Chinese companies to invest in South Africa, and welcomed the South African companies to exploit the market in China.

During the meeting, a representative of the South African business circle said that the enterprises of the African country wished to make contribution to the development of the relations with China.

The Chinese premier on Saturday arrived in South Africa, where he led a Chinese delegation to attend the just-ended World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in Johannesburg,

South Africa is the last leg of Zhu's four-nation Africa tour, which has already taken him to Algeria, Morocco and Cameroon.
