China holds first forum of village heads

Village heads from various parts of China gathered on Friday in this capital of central China's Hunan Province, attending the country's first forum of leaders of economically advanced villages.

Village heads from various parts of China gathered on Friday in this capital of central China's Hunan Province, attending the country's first forum of leaders of economically advanced villages.

The three-day forum, organized by the Changsha City Government and the Committee of the Communist Party of China of Changsha City,will cover topics including strategies for raising the incomes of Chinese farmers, reforms on the land lease system in China's ruralareas, and reforms on political systems in the country's villages and towns.

The annual salary of Wu Renbao, one of the participating village heads and Director of Huaxi village in east China's Jiangsu Province, totals three million yuan (363,000 US dollars), and the every household in Wu's village currently has a bank account of at least 500,000 yuan (60,460 US dollars).

Other villages which have sent their representatives to attend the forum have also achieved widely recognized economic success.

Great changes have taken place in China's rural areas in the past 50 years, changes which have permitted an increasing number of village heads to develop keen insight with regard to economic development and business.

In China, villagers elect their leaders, namely, the director of the village committee, by direct vote.
