Stranded Whale Calf Saved in Southern China

A wounded whale calf has been rescued after it was stranded ashore on Thursday near a wharf in Lin'gao County in south China's Hainan Province.

A wounded whale calf has been rescued after it was stranded ashore on Thursday near a wharf in Lin'gao County in south China's Hainan Province.

The calf was found on the shore at about 6:00 pm on Thursday. It had a wounded left fin and though still breathing, could not move.

Identified as a gray whale, the calf is about 1.65 meters long and weighs about 40 kg.

Rescuers have moved the calf to a safe place and will release it into deep water when it fully recovers.
