A strong earthquake occurred Monday morning in the South Pacific near Papua New Guinea, according to China's seismological monitoring network.

The quake, measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale, took place at 02:44 (Beijing time) at 3.1 degrees south latitude and 143.3 degrees east longitude, near Papua New Guinea.
