At least two people were killed in a severe earthquake struck offshore Papua New Guinea (PNG) Monday, the Australian Associated Press reported.

PNG's Geophysical Observatory said the earthquake measured between 7.5 and 7.9 on the Richter scale and there was no longer any risk of tsunamis following the quake. The Australian Geological Survey Organization measured the quake at 7.6 at 4:44 a.m. local time in the Wewak-Aitape area.

The quake ripped seaside homes off their stilts and a church official said two villagers had died.

A similar-sized earthquake in Papua New Guinea in 1998 caused a huge tidal wave that killed more than 2,000 people further west along the same section of coast. Monday's wave was much smaller than that in 1998.
