23rd AIPO Assembly Opens in Hanoi

The 23rd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO) opened on Monday morning.

The 23rd General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organization (AIPO) opened on Monday morning.

The 23rd AIPO will focus on issues of continuing to implement Hanoi Plan of Action and Vision 2020 with the targets of ensuring peace, stability of politics and security; promoting regional and international integration; cooperating development in the region; bringing internal force into full play; narrowing development gap;alleviating poverty; striving for an ASEAN of prosperity and stable development.

The eight AIPO member countries are Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Brunei and Myanmar, the other two ASEAN members, are special observers of the AIPO. The meeting are also attended by observer delegations from China and nine other countries.

The AIPO presidency is assumed by each member country in rotation every year. Vietnam has be the AIPO president country since the 22nd AIPO General Assembly held in Thailand last September.
