New Yorkers Mourn for Chinese-American Hero of '9.11' Incident

Thousands of Chinese-Americans and New Yorkers coming from all walks of life in New York gathered at a memorial service in China Town to pay tribute to Zack Zeng, a 29-year-old Chinese American who sacrificed himself for rescuing others at the World Trade Center when it was under the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

Thousands of Chinese-Americans and New Yorkers coming from all walks of life in New York gathered at a memorial service in China Town to pay tribute to Zack Zeng, a 29-year-old Chinese American who sacrificed himself for rescuing others at the World Trade Center when it was under the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001.

The New York City Council awarded the "Community Contribution Award" to Zack Zeng who became the second in American history to have been awarded this honor.

The award is mainly dedicated to Asia-Americans who have made great contributions to New York City. The New York City Council made a huge metal prize, on which records Zack Zeng' s life story.

Zack Zeng's mother told reporters that since his deeds was spread out, she got several phone calls each day, many being unknown Chinese and New Yorkers who extended their regards to her and expressed their wishes to aid her.

Presented at the farewell ceremony were American government and New York state officials, Zhang Hongxi, Chinese Consul-General in New York, President of New York Bank and some others.

Zhang Hongxi said Zack Zeng deserves to be a model for Chinese Americans.

Timothy Keaney, representative of the Bank of New York where Zack worked before his death, described Zack as a hard-working and selfless person who was always ready to help others.

On September 11, last year, after the world trade center was collapsed, all staffs evacuated from the New York Bank, while Zack Zeng rushed to the scene to help others. He carried the wounded people to the gate of the north building, when he went back again, the building toppled down, Zack Zeng sacrificed himself. At the moment, American Fox TV happened to shoot this scene.

According to reports, Zack Zeng's mother has been invited to attend the grand gathering for commemorating the "9.11" event on the ruins of the World Trade Center on September 11.

Born in Guangzhou in southern China on September 30, 1972, Zack Zeng, whose Chinese name was Zeng Zhe, emigrated to the United States in 1988. He pursued undergraduate studies and obtained an MBA degree at the University of Rochester before he joined the Bank of New York in 1998 with a title of assistant treasurer in the depository receipts division.
