A disaster handling drill will be held by the industrial and commercial center of Shanghai in mid-October to demonstrate new technology and measures for dealing with such emergencies.

The event will be organized in tandem with the 5th international conference of the Local Authorities Confronting Disasters and Emergencies (LACDE) scheduled to be convened in Shanghai from Oct. 15-17, said local sources.

The Shanghai Municipal Office of Civil Defense is organizing the drill, which it says will simulate real disaster situations and measures to reduce damage and injury. It will contain some newfeatures, including evacuation from high-rise apartments and rescue by robot.

Government officials and disaster-reduction experts from 28 countries have confirmed their attendance at the Shanghai LACDE international conference, which will highlight the reduction of risks and weak points in urban sustainable development. The conference has so far received over 50 academic papers.

LACDE, founded in Israel in October 1994, is a non-profit international organization focusing on the scientific handling, control and prevention of disasters and emergencies. Chen Liangyu,Mayor of Shanghai, acts as the head of the organization.
