Chinese President Meets Former Japanese Prime Minister

The friendship and cooperation between China and Japan has greatly benefited the two peoples and contributed to peace, stability, development and prosperity, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday.

Chinese President Meets Former Japanese Prime Minister
The friendship and cooperation between China and Japan has greatly benefited the two peoples and contributed to peace, stability, development and prosperity, Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday.

Jiang was speaking during a meeting with former Japanese Prime Minister Morihiro Hosokawa who visited Beijing at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs.

Jiang said Horihiro was an old friend of the Chinese people, who had made important contributions to the development of the friendship between China and Japan during and after his tenure as the Prime Minister.

Jiang said he always believed in "drawing on the lessons of history and facing the future" on the issue of Sino-Japanese relations, proceeding from an historical standpoint, giving full play to the positive factors in bilateral relations and abandoningthe negative factors that disrupt and disturb bilateral relations.

Jiang said China warmly welcomed a 10,000-member Japanese delegation which is to pay a goodwill visit to the country in lateSeptember.
