Italy to mark September 11

The first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington will be marked by Italians with a series of solemn initiatives in Italy on Wednesday.

The first anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington will be marked by Italians with a series of solemn initiatives in Italy on Wednesday.

Security has been bolstered throughout the country with specialanti-terrorist units deployed at airports, ports, NATO military bases and offices, US diplomatic and civilian interests as well asthose of other countries engaged in the Operation Enduring Freedomagainst terrorism.

Italian Defense Minister Antonio Martino said the increased security was in line with actions being taken in other European countries.

The celebration in Rome will be held at the St. Mary of the Angels' Cathedral and Italian Interior Minister Giuseppe Pisanu will be present.
