The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan Wednesday said terrorism must be defeated by the world acting as one.

In a speech at a ceremony held at the UN headquarters in New York to commemorate the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the United States, Annan said that "today we come together as aworld community because we were attacked as a world community."

He said there could be no greater affront to the spirit and purpose of the United Nations than the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11.

"Everything that we work for -- peace, development, health, freedom -- is damaged by this horror. Everything that we believe in -- respect for human life, justice, tolerance, pluralism and democracy -- is threatened by it," Annan said.

In his speech at the ceremony, Jan Kavan, president of the 57thSession of the UN General Assembly, appealed to all UN member states to make joint efforts and take collective responsibility for the fight against terrorism, saying that the world cannot let terrorism to hide behind faith or culture.

He said that the United Nations must produce results in formal practical steps to suppress the menace of terrorism, a crime without borders.
