The European Union (EU) on Wednesday issued a declaration commemorating the Sept. 11 tragedy in the United States last year, showing their unity in the fight against terrorism.

"It is with deep sorrow that we remember that tragic day. Our thoughts and prayers go to the bereaved families and friends in the United States and throughout the world who were stricken by the violence unleashed a year ago," said leaders of all 15 EU member states through the declaration.

The September 11 attacks "reminded all of us that security and democracy can never be taken for granted but must be defended actively and ceaselessly."

The declaration, which was also made on behalf of EU's candidate countries, made clear that the scourge of terrorism, in itself a denial of common democratic values and principles, must continue to be met through steadfast international cooperation. Itsaid those who perpetrate and sponsor terrorist acts will be brought to justice and punished.

The Europeans said the terrorist attacks on last September 11 "have given rise to the most comprehensive international cooperation in decades. Countries all over the world have united in the common cause against the kind of cynical contempt for humanlives that lies behind it."

The leaders said that the unique solidarity of the world must be sustained and supported, also through dialogue of cultures.

The EU told the world that "it will not slacken its resolve" tocontribute to the international community's fight against terrorism. The EU will continue to stand side by side with the United States and all the other countries in this endeavor and seek to build a just international order that promotes peace and prosperity for all.
