A US airliner was intercepted and escorted to an unexpected airport by US Air Force fighters Wednesday after a disturbance was reported on board, local press reports said.

F-16 fighters escorted the American Airlines flight, which reportedly had been headed to Dallas, to the Bush IntercontinentalAirport in Houston, Texas.

"We seem to have some sort of situation," Houston Airport System spokesman Ernie DeSoto said.

The plane was surrounded by law enforcement agents after it landed at the airport Desoto said, adding that US air marshals were aboard the flight. No other details were available at this moment.

Security was extraordinarily tight in the United States as the country marked the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks which killed more than 3,000 people.
