The Pacific Islands Forum Trade Office officially opened here Wednesday evening.

China's Assistant Foreign Minister Zhou Wenzhong said at the opening ceremony that to promote economic and trade cooperation and investment between China and forum countries, the Chinese government signed an agreement with the forum on setting up the trade office in November 2000.

Its official opening meant a new bridge between China and forumcountries, Zhou added.

The two parties were economically mutually complementary, Zhou said. China would like to take the trade office's opening as an opportunity to further deepen and broaden cooperation in various spheres, and promote relations between China and forum countries.

Noel Levi, secretary-general of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, voiced appreciation for the Chinese government allowing setting up the trade office. He said the opening signaledthat friendly cooperation between the two parties had reached a new level.

The Pacific Islands Forum is an important international organization in the south Pacific region. It currently comprises 16 member countries including Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. China is one of the 12 countries that hold discussions with the forum.
