Tropical Storm Hits South China Coast

The strong tropical storm Hagupit touched down in Pinggang Township, Yangjiang City of south China's Guangdong Province, at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, with strong winds at its center, according to the China Central Meteorological Station.

The strong tropical storm Hagupit touched down in Pinggang Township, Yangjiang City of south China's Guangdong Province, at 3:30 a.m. Thursday, with strong winds at its center, according to the China Central Meteorological Station.

At 5 a.m. Thursday, the tropical storm center was at 21.8 degrees north latitude and 111.6 degrees east longitude in Yangxi County, with full gale force winds near its center.

The meteorological station forecasts that the tropical storm center is expected to move northwest about 15 km per hour and is likely to become weaker.

Due to the influence of the tropical storm, strong gale-force winds are expected in the northern part of the South China Sea, the western coastal area of Guangdong and the northern coasts of Hainan Province, as well as in Beibu Bay and the southern coastal areas of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, beginning Thursday.

The tropical storm will bring heavy rains to the affected areas.

According to the Guangdong Provincial Meteorological Station, the provincial capital, Guangzhou, and the southern and western parts of the Pearl River Delta will have heavy rains Thursday.
