Putin Extends Condolences to Bush on Anniversary of Sept. 11Attacks

Russian President Vladimir Putin called his US counterpart, George W. Bush, early Wednesday to express condolences on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Interfax news agency quoted Putin's spokesman Alexei Gromov as saying.

Russian President Vladimir Putin called his US counterpart, George W. Bush, early Wednesday to express condolences on the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Interfax news agency quoted Putin's spokesman Alexei Gromov as saying.

"On this day, I want to reiterate my condolences and express not only regret but also support of the entire Russian people to the Americans," Putin told Bush from the Black Sea port of Sochi, where he was on vacation.

"In Russia, they say that time cures, but certain things cannotand should not be forgotten. Recently we commemorated those who were killed in a string of blasts in apartment buildings in Moscowthree years ago. Today, we are remembering those who died in Washington and New York a year ago," Putin noted.

In turn, Bush recalled that Putin was the first world leader tophone him on the day of the tragedy. And a year later, Putin was also the first one to extend condolences to the Americans.
