Representatives of the United Nations Command (UNC) in South Korea and the People's Army of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Thursday signed a technical agreement on railway construction inside the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

The agreement was signed at the truce village in Panmunjom by Maj. Gen. James N. Soligan, UNC deputy chief of staff, and Col. Gen. Ri Chan-bok, DPRK's People's Army senior delegate to the military talks on Thursday afternoon, according to a news release of the UNC here.

The agreement provides the basis for inter-Korean military talks on the proposed railway and road reconnection between South Korea and DPRK along the eastern coast as the UNC entrusted jurisdiction inside the DMZ to South Korea for all matters relatedto construction work, according to the release.

South Korea and DPRK will hold working-level military talks on Sept. 13-18 to complete the formalities required for the construction, including drawing up documents to guarantee the safety of both sides. Another inter-Korean working-level meeting will be held Friday at Mount Geumgang in DPRK to discuss practicalissues related to the railway and road reconnection project.

The second inter-Korean economic cooperation talks on Aug. 27-30 agreed to start the reconstruction works of inter-Korean railways and roads on Sept. 18.
