The European Union (EU) on Friday welcomed United States President George W. Bush's commitment to work within the United Nations on Iraq, and warned Baghdad to respect UN resolutions.

The European Commission, executive arm of the 15-nation bloc, said in a statement that Bush had sent "an important, strong and clear signal" outlining why the world should be concerned about Iraq and making clear that the authority of the United Nations wason the line.

"The United States' strong engagement with the United Nations will make it easier to find a common line between the United States and the European Union," it said in a comment on Bush's speech on Thursday to the UN General Assembly.

In an attempt to fend off criticism over his administration's unilateral approach, Bush urged the United Nations on Thursday to enforce its resolutions on Iraq. But he also warned the UN would otherwise be "irrelevant".

"Iraq must now take all steps required by the UN Security Council resolutions," said the statement. But it made no mention of the possibility of military action if Iraq refused to admit UN arms inspectors to root out its suspected weapons of mass destruction.
