China Favors Stronger UN Role
Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan on Friday said that the role of the United Nations should be brought to full play.

In his speech to the general debate of the 57th session of the UN General Assembly at the UN headquarters in New York this afternoon, Tang said the United Nations "plays an irreplaceable role in safeguarding world peace, ensuring universal security and promoting common development."

"The purposes and principles of the UN Charter have a strong and abiding staying power. We should give full play to the role ofthis world body, promote a democratized pattern of international relations and spare no effort in the quest for a bright future of mankind," Tang said.

In his speech, Tang also said that efforts should be made to promote dialogue and reconciliation to facilitate the settlement of regional conflicts.

He said that China supports the just cause of the Palestinian people for the restoration of their legitimate national rights andthe establishment of a country of their own as well as relevant UNSecurity Council resolutions and the principle of land for peace.

He also said that China opposes violence directed against innocent civilians and disapproves the practice of using violence against violence.

Tang said China stands for a political settlement of the Iraq issue. The United Nations should play an important role on this issue and Iraq should strictly comply with relevant Security Council resolutions, he said.

Tang also expressed the hope for an early restoration of dialogue between India and Pakistan on the basis of mutual respectand equality.

On Afghanistan, Tang said that china is willing to make constructive efforts together with the international community forlasting peace and post-war reconstruction in the country and it supports the United Nations in playing an important role in this regard, he said.
