Ramzi Binalshibh, one of the al Qaeda operative wanted by the United States and Germany for allegedly planning and helping to carry out the September 11 terror attacks on the US, has been captured in Pakistan, US officials said on Friday.

Binalshibh, a Yemeni national, is now in US custody, said the officials, who would not elaborate further about the capture.

In an audio message played Thursday on al-Jazeera Arabic satellite television, Binalshibh said he had hoped to be one of the hijackers but could not get an entry visa into the United States.

Also in the interview, Binalshibh said he and other al Qaeda followers were elated when they watched the news of the hijacked planes slamming into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York.

Binalshibh and another key al Qaeda member reportedly affirmed that Osama bin Laden was personally involved in planning the September 11 attacks that killed about 3,000 people in New York and Washington.
