UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan met with the Foreign Ministers of several Arab countries Saturday to discuss the situation in Iraq and the Middle East, according to a UN spokesman.

The secretary-general wanted to address the group of officials from the League of Arab States in order to enlist their support for the return of UN weapons inspectors to Iraq and to strengthen the efforts to restore peace and stability to the region, the spokesman said.

"We meet at a critical time, as governments are discussing war and peace," Annan said. "It's an unsettled world and every effort must be made to avoid another major conflict."

Annan also informed the officials that the question of the Middle East would be discussed in the meeting of the diplomatic Quartet, namely the UN, the European Union, Russia and United States, in the following days.

During the meeting, held on the sideline of the 57th UN General Assembly's annual high-level debate, the UN chief also stressed the urgent need to address the very serious humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories, according to the spokesman.

Annan is scheduled to meet Saturday afternoon with Amre Moussa, secretary-general of the League of Arab States. Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri is expected to attend the meeting, the spokesman said.
