Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan said Saturday at the United Nations that it is hoped that the United Nations can play a greater role in promoting peace and developmentin the world.

He made the remarks while meeting with the president of the 57th General Assembly session, Jan Kavan, who was former deputy prime minister and former foreign minister of the Czech Republic.

Tang, who is here to attend the ongoing general debate of the General Assembly, said peace and development are the main themes of the current era, and that the United Nations can play a greater role in this regard.

Representatives from many countries, in their speeches at the general debate, have underlined the importance of multilateral cooperation and voiced their hope that the world body can play a more important role in international affairs, he noted.

Tang congratulated Kavan on his assumption of the presidency of the current assembly session, and expressed appreciation for his contributions to the development of Sino-Czech relations.

Tang also thanked Kavan for his role in rejecting the so-called proposal of Taiwan's "participation in" the United Nations at the just-concluded meeting of the UN General Committee.

The proposal is seen by the international community as a violation of the UN Charter and international law.

Tang said China will continue to support the work of Kavan as the president of the 57th General Assembly session.

On UN reforms, Tang said that the reform drive is aimed at strengthening the role of the United Nations, improving its efficiency of work, improving democracy in the decision-making process and coordination and cooperation among various UN agencies.

The reform campaign is also designed to make a more reasonable distribution and effective use of the existing resources while taking into account the interests of all parties concerned, especially the concerns of the broad members in the developing world, he said.

During the meeting, Kavan briefed Tang on the work program of the current General Assembly session, saying that peace and development are among the UN priorities.

He expressed his willingness to promote the implementation of the target for development adopted at various summits since the conclusion of the UN Millennium Summit, held in September 2000 at the UN headquarters in New York.
