The head of the State Development planning commission, Zeng Peiyan, says China's ongoing development of its western regions has made substantial achievements.

He noted that major infrastructure construction has made rapid progress with the launch of projects to carry natural gas and electricity from the country's west to the east and the Qinghai-Tibetan railway.

By July this year, nearly 6 million hectares of land in Western China had been turned into forest. There has also been substantive progress in the development of science and technology, education, and industries with local characteristics.
