The curtain fell on the first part of the fifth inter-Korean family reunions, with silver-haired men and women bidding adieu to their kin after three brief days of meetings Sunday.

The 455 South Koreans parted with their 100 DPRK relatives at Onjonggak in the morning, and boarded the cruiser Solbong back to the South Sunday afternoon.

Another 100 people, mostly in the 70s and 80s, will go to Mt. Kumgang Monday morning for the second part of the fifth mass reunions since August 2000.

At the parting scene in Onjonggak Sunday morning, the diamond-like peaks testifying to the name Kumgang, which means diamond, overlooked the families suffering yet another heartache.

The parting faces were invariably brighter than previous reunions, with many family members mentioning the reunion centers the two Koreas agreed to build recently.

They are expecting to finish the construction of the Mt. Kumgang reunion center by next March.

The center is expected to benefit a large number of those eagerly awaiting a chance to meet their kin after half a century of separation. There are some 100,000 on South Korea's list alone.
