The settlement of the Vietnam-China land demarcation issues has ushered in an important era in Vietnam's history as well as in its relations with China, Vietnam News on Monday quoted Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Le Cong Phung as saying.

Phung, also Head of the Border Committee and Head of the Vietnamese Government-level delegation for Negotiations on Vietnam-China Border and Territory Issues, made the remarks last week in an exclusive interview with Vietnam News on the progress of the settlement of the border issue between the two countries.

The settlement, he said, "has also contributed to regional stabilization, receiving considerable appreciation from both nations and the world, and especially among regional partners."

The outcome of the negotiations and the signing of the 1999 Vietnam-China Treaty on Land Borderline was commensurate with the basic principles agreed upon by both sides, ensuring equity and satisfaction of both parties and conforming to the basic and long-term interests of Vietnam, Phung noted.

He added that the solutions to the land border issues were satisfactory, and well serve the interests and aspirations of both sides.

As for the significance of the settlement of the Vietnam-China land border issue, the deputy foreign minister said, "by signing the Treaty on the Land Border, we have completely settled one of the three issues related to borders and territory which have existed for a long time in our relations with China, namely, the land border, the Beibu Gulf and the South China Sea."

"The Treaty was a result of long-term negotiations and compromises from both sides, reflecting the efforts of both countries, and fully taking into account the international law and practices."

This step, he said, "has helped us to achieve the goal of building the Vietnam-China border into an area of peace, friendship and stability. It contributed to the furthering of mutual trust and creating the momentum for increasing and developing cooperation with China."
