China's Guangdong Exports Hit Record High

Guangdong Province's export volume reached a record high of US$10.6 billion in August - up 20.9 per cent from the corresponding period last year.

Guangdong Province's export volume reached a record high of US$10.6 billion in August - up 20.9 per cent from the corresponding period last year.

It is the second month that the province's export volume surged beyond US$10 billion this year after hitting US$10.51 billion in July.

Guangdong's import and export volume registered US$19.73 billion last month, representing 34.8 per cent of the provincial total in the eight months this year.

This sound performance of overseas trade in August has helped Guangdong amass a total overseas trade volume of US$137.56 billion in the first eight months this year - an increase of 22.6 per cent on the same period last year. It accounts for 35.9 per cent of the national total.

Guangdong's exports reached US$73.31 billion while imports registered US$64.25 billion between January and August, both up 22.6 per cent.

Guangdong recorded an overseas trade surplus of US$9.06 billion during the January-August period.

The province's exports to the United States have been relatively unaffected by the terrorist attacks on September 11.

Guangdong sold US$18.26 billion worth of products to the United States in the first eight months, up 21.1 per cent on the same period of the previous year.

Its exports to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, the European Union, Japan and Southeast Asia also jumped greatly to US$26.37 billion, US$9.17 billion, US$5.89 billion and US$3.82 billion respectively.

Overseas-funded companies and joint ventures played an even bigger part in Guangdong's overseas trade.

Exports from overseas-funded firms and joint ventures grew 24.1 per cent to US$42.22 billion, accounting for 57.6 per cent of the provincial total.

And Guangdong's State-owned enterprises sold US$25.85 billion worth of products overseas, growing 12.8 per cent and representing 35.3 per cent of the total.
