Reception Marks Change of Chief of Central Government Liaison Office in Hong Kong

The Liaison Office of the China's central government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) held a reception Monday afternoon to say goodbye to outgoing director Jiang Enzhu and to welcome new director Gao Siren.

The Liaison Office of the China's central government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) held a reception Monday afternoon to say goodbye to outgoing director Jiang Enzhu and to welcome new director Gao Siren.

Delivering a speech, Jiang Enzhu pointed out that since the return of Hong Kong to the motherland five years ago, the SAR government led by Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa has managed to maintain the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong, with the support of the central government.

The sound start of the implementation of the "one country, two systems" principle results from the strong leadership of the central government and from the concerted efforts of Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, the SAR government and the Hong Kong compatriots, he said.

Speaking at the reception, Jiang said, he is most delighted that the Liaison Office in the Hong Kong SAR has earnestly carriedout the "one country, two systems" principle, handled various issues in strict accordance with the Basic Law and comprehensivelyfulfilled all the obligations entrusted by the central government during the past five years.

Gao Siren, newly-appointed director of the Liaison Office, expressed his appreciation of Jiang Enzhu for his work in the pastfive years and said the "one country, two systems" principle has witnessed great success since Hong Kong's return.

Gao said he is proud of and also feels the great responsibilityof being the director of the Liaison Office of the central government in the Hong Kong SAR, in this critical time of Hong Kong's economic and social development.

Citing the words of "carrying on the past and opening a new wayfor the future, and forging ahead with the times," Gao said he will continue to carry forward the fine traditions of the central government institutions in the Hong Kong SAR, implement the principles of "one country, two systems," "Hong Kong people governing Hong Kong" and a high degree of autonomy, and make new contribution to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.

Hong Kong SAR Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa, on behalf of the SAR government and the citizens of Hong Kong, thanked Jiang Enzhu for his contribution to Hong Kong and extended welcome to Gao Siren for his assuming of the new post.

He said he believed that the Liaison Office led by Gao will surely fulfill all the duties and continue to push forward the great cause of the "one country, two systems."

Those who attended the reception were Fok Ying-tung, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC); Ji Peiding, commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Hong Kong SAR; Xiong Ziren, commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison; and Wang Yufa, political commissar of the PLA Hong Kong Garrison.

The reception was attended by some 2,600 representatives, including principal officials of the Hong Kong SAR government, Hong Kong deputies to the National People's Congress, members of the CPPCC National Committee, officials of foreign consulates in Hong Kong, officials of the Chinese mainland-funded enterprises inHong Kong, and local celebrities.
