Israeli forces destroyed nine weapons workshops and conducted house-to-house searches for militants early Tuesday in the Khan Younis refugee camp, the army said.

In a broad sweep into a Palestinian-ruled neighborhood in the Gaza refugee camp, the army said its forces arrested 23 suspected militants.

Palestinian security officials in Khan Younis said soldiers had searched about 60 houses in the five-hour raid and arrested at least 18 people. They said several were later released and between 10 and 13 people remained in Israeli custody.

There were no casualties, the security officials said.

The Israeli soldiers destroyed two metal workshops and damaged a car garage and several textile and plastics factories, Palestinian security said.

Troops also blew up the two-story house of Yusef Egha, whose son was killed eight months ago during an attack on an Israeli settlement near Khan Younis, the officials said, adding that Egha's son was an activist in the militant group Hamas.

In addition, troops searched the home of Younis Astal, a professor at the Islamic University in Gaza and a Hamas supporter, the security officials said. Astal was not home at the time, but troops arrested three of his relatives, the officials added.

Israel says its operations are part of its war against what it calls Palestinian terrorism. The latest activity took place just hours after soldiers shot and killed an Egyptian citizen in the Gaza Strip.
