Together with Hungary, China is willing to promote bilateral relations between the two countries and their armed forces, said Zhang Wannian, vice-chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, Tuesday in Beijing.

Zhang made the remark during his meeting with Chief of General Staff of the Hungary National Defense Forces Fodor Lajos. In spite of the physical distance separating the two countries, Zhang said, the people of China and Hungary have enjoyed a long friendship.

Overall cooperation between China and Hungary not only complies with the interests of both peoples, but contributes to regional and global peace and stability, he said.

The Chinese government has maintained a consistent policy on the Taiwan issue, Zhang said, noting it will continue to adhere to the basic principles of peaceful reunification and "one country, two systems," while never ceding the right to use military force.

"We hope the Hungarian government and armed forces will fully understand and support China on this major issue which involves the feelings of all the Chinese people," Zhang said.

Fodor Lajos said the two countries have many interests in common and also share similar views on a range of international issues. Hungary will continue to strive to promote cooperation and exchanges between the two countries and the two armed forces, he said.
