Japan acknowledged the fact of its colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945 and expressed "deep remorse" for it, said a joint declaration issued in Pyongyang Tuesday.

According to the document issued at the end of the first summitbetween DPRK leader Kim Jong Il and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, Japan will deal with the compensation to the DPRK in the form of cooperation and economic assistance.

An apology, along with compensation for Japan's harsh colonial rule, has long been demanded by the DPRK as a condition to progress long-stalled talks on establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
